The first advertising campaign for the stockings described nylon as having "the strength of steel and the sheerness of cobwebs"#Nylon has a variety of applications. It flows well when liquid and can be molded into hard-wearing solid objects such as gear wheels, children's toys and food mixers#Because nylon can stretch by about one-fifth of its length without breaking, it also replaced silk in parachute making#The silkworm makes silk thread by squeezing a sticky solution through tiny holes in its head. Carothers' process was a synthetic imitation of this same process#By the time nylon hit the market in 1939 it had cost Du Pont $27 million to develop and launch, an enormous sum for the times#The chemical name for nylon is polyhexamethyleneadipamide. It took Du Pont two-and-a-half years to come up with its brand name#In the Eighties Du Pont invented lycra, which is incorporated into hosiery. It marked a new stage in the technology of women's underwear, and now dominates the market in the USA
